Videos: Marcus Foster Performs for Crypt Sessions

Wow... these totally slipped me by so I'm sharing them with you guys! :)

"Nameless Path"

"I Was Broken"

"Faint Stir of Madness"

From The Crypt Sessions:
Marcus Foster is a very talented young man indeed. Still only 24, he's just earned himself a master's degree in sculpture from the Royal College of Art and has already exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery with a hot air balloon fashioned from cold steel. Next weekend he's DJ-ing on the main stage at the Wilderness Festival. And with his nu-folk singer-songwriter's hat on, he's about to release his first album, Nameless Path, on Communion Records. How he had time to come and play for us at The Crypt Sessions is anyone's guess, but we're extremely glad he did.

Marcus's big musical break came when Let Me Sign, a song he co-wrote with buddy Bobby Long, was recorded by schoolmate Rob Pattinson for the soundtrack of the first Twilight film. But when you hear him play, it's pretty obvious that Marcus would have risen to the surface anyway. A keen student of Tom Waits and Bob Dylan, he is blessed with an exceptionally soulful voice, a poet's handle on the human condition and a range of musical expression to match - from the galloping Stones bluesiness driving album track Shadow Of The City, to the dusty, spaghetti western sprawl of Circle In The Square. He also has friends in all the right places. But as The Independent said, 'Remarkably talented and excitingly different, Foster shows he's worth the celebrity endorsements. And proves he doesn't need them either.'

The Tiger Review Interviews Lee MacDougall!

British Singer Lee MacDougall finds passion in singing and songwriting

Dreaming to be something more than a worker at a local fish processing factory, Lee MacDougall, a singer and songwriter from England, took the bold step and put himself and his music out for the world to enjoy.
Tahlequah High was able to interview the singer via phone call while he was on his way to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the Tuscaloosa tornado relief show.
MacDougall says that his inspiration for his music is life itself, being alive, traveling and meeting new people.
“I am inspired by the human psychology, I find everything interesting,” said MacDougall.
But he had to start somewhere; MacDougall says that he performed his first show in his hometown of Grimsby at the age of 15 in a youth club.
“I was really nervous before the show, and I was thinking that if it went really well I was going to be a singer. And if it doesn’t then I will totally go and work in a fish factory. I think 4 people clapped, it felt so good and I wanted more of that.”
Currently MacDougall is touring the United States. He says his favorite part of touring in the US is the differences and variations among the towns that he travels to.

Audio: Marcus Foster talks about Rob Pattinson, "I Was Broken"

Here's some audio from a interview with Marcus Foster at the Green Man Festival.

In this clip, he talks about his friend (Rob) who was "supposed to play" the lead role for the upcoming Jeff Buckley film. He also talks about his band, his upcoming tour and the direction he plans on taking his music in the future.

Dallas Observer Talks with Lee MacDougall

Here's a recent article from the Dallas Observer. I'm bad & totally missed this one-- check it out!

Singer-songwriter Lee MacDougall hails from England, but the guy just can't seem to get enough of America. Earlier this year, MacDougall made his maiden tour of our fair country. Just a few months later, he's back for more. And, seeing that MacDougall's music is heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, America seems a pretty good place to ply his craft.

Speaking from a tour stop in Atlanta and in anticipation of his upcoming, Saturday night performance at Poor David's Pub, MacDougall was kind enough to talk to DC9 about making his way from a lowly fish processing plant in England to sharing stages with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison.

Lee MacDougall talks with Awaiting The Flood!

Here's a new interview with Lee while he's out on tour! Go see him!! You will be glad you did! :)

Before Lee MacDougall took the stage in Nashville on August 13, I got a chance to talk with him for a few minutes. With his easy, charming wit, Lee discussed heavy metal, TJ Maxx, and his mom.

ATF: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you?

LM: Um, wow. No one’s ever asked that before. I guess I would say they’re like…three minute movies. I try to tell a whole story in just three minutes. Like storyteller folk pop.

ATF: You’ve been playing for quite a while. What have you found to be the better teacher over the years–experience or lessons?

LM: Oh, experience. I’ve never had lessons. The more you play, the more confident you get, I suppose. It’s really strange, actually… I had two months off over the summer, and my first show back was really crazy. You literally need to play every night, I think, and then you start to get in a rhythm. Just play and play and play.

Reviews: StereoBoard covers Marcus Foster, Vance Foy performances June 18th @ The Emperor in Cambridge

I'll be honest, I don't often listen to Dermot O'Leary's Radio 2 show, but something tells me that fate bought me & Dermot together last week when he had new boy Marcus Foster (pictured, below) on his show performing a couple of tracks. Randomly tuning into Radio 2 and being instantly drawn to the voice, I did a bit of investigating to find out who he was, and exactly a week later I was sat in the most intimate gig I've ever been to, discovering two amazing talents that I'm so glad didn't pass me by.

London boy Marcus Foster is currently on tour supporting Northern Ireland's Foy Vance (pictured, above) and I was lucky to catch the two of them in a small room above a random pub in Cambridge. Having only heard of both artists just one week before, it hadn't taken me long to download Foy's album and Marcus' EP - and I was already addicted. It's not often that an artist can interest me so quickly, and to have two that impressed me enough to be desperate to see them live made me think I was onto something pretty special - and I wasn't remotely wrong!

A darkened room with small candles on tables and a few rows of chairs set a perfect scene for the gig, with a maximum of around 60 people taking their places, some of us lucky enough to be just two feet from the "stage" area. After a fantastic introduction about what a talent he is, Marcus Foster took to the stage armed with nothing but his acoustic guitar and his mic. From the first line of his first song, the crowd were mesmerised. His raw gravely vocal is punctuated with vulnerability as he plays his way through his impressive collection of songs, stopping briefly between to shyly comment on how intimate the gig is.

An awesome version of his current single, 'Rushes & Reeds' is a perfect advert for Marcus' talent and range, but by far, the tracks from EP 'Tumble Down' are the stand out songs, particularly 'Tumble Down' itself. Set closer 'Shadows of the City is Marcus at his best - an almost eerie start kicks into a frenzied up-tempo number, Marcus completely losing himself in the song, ignoring the fact that just a tiny amount of people are watching his every move so closely - literally!

Reviews: Bearded Magazine covers Marcus Foster's June 13th Barfly show

"It's as if the Sundance Kid himself rolled into town, strolled onto stage and sang his soul out to the people of the Barfly."

Intimate and acoustic Marcus Foster begins with little introduction but already with signs of thanks as he conducts his band to the start of ‘I Don't Mind’. Sporting an acoustic guitar with his trio and equipping himself with his soulful voice; Marcus draws in the audience's praises and screams them back holding back no sweat or dynamic vocal fear.

The sheer drop between the usual set up for Marcus and his band to acoustic trio may seem a disappointment to some with first thoughts of the gig. However there's very little to nit pick at this evening. The cajon and double bass partnership bodes well with Mr Foster's screeching vocals and electric guitar smashes and stabs in ‘Shadow of the City’. Continuing to promote the crowd's legs to two step their way to a dance through other songs such as newly released single ‘Rushes and Reeds’. The bluesy technicality of the song show no problem for the band or Marcus as they flaunt with ease through the gripping track considering their new set up.

Hahaha.. I love the part where Marcus starts celebrating his victory in the video game and then actually getting to hear him playfully sing and do a happy dance... LOL Oh, man.. ;-P And if that wasn't enough for me.. the silly faces he makes towards the end of video. Awesomeness. That is all.

No wait, there's more. In all seriousness, it was great to see him performing live with his band, now I'm kinds of excited and looking forward to that day when I am able to see him live in that format! The band sounds great with him!

Reviews: Marcus Foster's June 14th Barfly show

Live Review: Marcus Foster @ Barfly

Earlier this week, Tuesday 14th June, I made my way over to Barfly to see the rather talented Marcus Foster perform for the second night in a row, for the release of his most recent single ‘Rushes & Reeds.’ I saw Foster for the first time a few years back at an open mic night by accident, and after seeing one too many shy, skinny dudes with their guitar there was something refreshing about him and his desire to simply play his tunes to the room, that got me and the few friends I was with interested enough to follow his steady progression from open mic, to taking his act on the road, to now- headlining his own gig and having released a few singles and an EP, ‘Tumble Down’.

She'd like to know if anyone that night actually captured video of it-- she would love to see it!!! Let me know!

Super special thanks to Sam and the band, and Holly and the guys for sticking around afterwards when they needed to hustle back on the road so soon!

Marcus Foster: Video & Quote Of The Day!

"My mum had a piano in her house, and I just started playing. I tried to learn the recorder for a little bit, and then the violin and it wasn’t really working. I listened to a lot of Beatles stuff and started doing recitals at school. I just like performing, I guess. I was a massive attention-seeker as a child."

Article: Sam Bradley's "Minor Tour" is MAJOR!

This great article is getting me so excited for Sam's concert in the next few weeks!! Yay!

To say that Sam Bradley is an old soul seems too cliché; Yet how else could a 24 year old who remains humble in the face of fame, involves himself in philanthropy and appreciates Ray Charles be described? Without a doubt, Bradley is a rare gem in the music industry; He has stayed true to his blues-rock roots while opening up to possibilities of country and folk as well. Still relatively new to the music scene, he has already put out a self titled EP (2009) as well as an album entitled Zuni (2010). While most his age are finding places to live, beefing up resumes and changing their majors for the 3rd time, Bradley is making the road his home, gaining recognition for his tours and even co-writing for a soundtrack to one of the most popular movie series of our time.

Bradley is currently at the start of his "Minor Tour", which has him playing in cities across North America. Backed by his friends and band mates (Mark Kerrey - Drums, Jeff Riedlinger - Bass and John Notto - Guitar) Bradley will be sharing his infectiously warm personality and his poetic songs to long-time and first-time listeners. Audiences everywhere have long awaited a headlining tour, and it seems that Bradley is just as excited to be part of it all.

Article: Marcus Foster is Guardian UK's Musician of The Day!

Awww.... You know what is? That's awesome, that's what!

Hometown: London.

The lineup: Marcus Foster (vocals, guitar).

The background: We've just been interviewing an artist whose music suggests a young, black Jeffrey Dahmer trapped in a charnel house with Dr Dre and DJ Screw, which as you can imagine was always going to be a pretty hard act to follow. But we're going to at least try to sustain the mood of grisly pleasure, tomorrow anyway, with one of Tyler, the Creator's favourite new musicians, James Pants.

Today, meanwhile, as something of a respite we present a gentleman, 24 years young, with the voice of a weathered veteran of several bar wars. We've been told that he is "honest" (unlike all the other musicians around, who lie constantly) and "real" (compared to his peers, who are made out of polymers) and that there is "no one quite like him today".

. . .

Congratulations, Marcus!

Article/Interview: Robert Pattinson Talks About Writing Songs

In a recent interview with ElMundo.es, Robert Pattinson answered a several fans questions while promoting his current movie in theatres, Water for Elephants. His music was brought up and here's what he had to say:

12. Hello, Robert. We could hear singing, play the piano, guitar … Even composing songs. “Never Think” and “Let Me Sign”, which appear on the soundtrack to “Twilight,” and “I Was Broken” sound great. I guess it is difficult to do both a film career and a musical career, but do you intend release a record? Are you already working on it? A greeting and good luck in everything. Raquel

I’m writing songs. But without thinking of a CD.

Oh, could you just imagine! I'm hopeful for some new music... just saying. No pressure, Rob! ;) I'll wait patiently, of course!

Article: Marcus Foster supports his Tumble Down EP Tour!

Check out this new article about Marcus from eGigs!

You could be forgiven if you haven't heard of Marcus Foster before but if you have heard of him and chose to NOT see him live, that is a mistake which cannot be forgiven. A tiny venue with no more than 60 people in the audience, The Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath in Birmingham welcomed Marcus Foster to the stage on his 'Tumble Down EP Tour'. Now I was a little pessimistic about this venue…situated on the top floor of a pub, in the middle of Kings Heath. The acoustics were never going to be perfect but I wasn't expecting them to be but the evening was still surprisingly good.

Article: 10 Questions with... Marcus Foster

I really enjoyed this article of 10 Questions with... from the For Folks Sake's site. I felt like I was in the room with Marcus while they interviewed him!! I can't wait to see him in concert again!

In the week that his Tumble Down EP is released, Marcus Foster has taken the time to answer our gently probing questions.

For anyone who may not have heard your music before, can you describe it to us in less than 10 words?

Gospel, Blues, Funk, Folk, Rock’n’Roll. I think that pretty much sums it up!

Your EP “Tumble Down” has been a long time in the making. Can you tell us a bit about the process of creating this EP? And how do you feel about the difficulties getting it released?

I was really lucky to find Communion. I did a compilation with them last year and they seemed like the right kind of people to work with. The EP is ready to go and I think it’s a nice introduction to the album.

You’ve stated before that your musical influences range from Van Morrison and Bob Dylan, to newer artists such as Johnny Flynn. Which artist has been the latest to influence you, and why?

I really like the new Black Keys album. And a lot of Jack White stuff recently. I really like the production, the attitude, the sounds. It’s coming from old-school, blues influences and is recorded with beautiful equipment and is a different approach. I’m really liking the idea of being a bit out there at the moment.

Where do you get your ideas for songs? Are your lyrics based on personal experience?

Some of them are. Some songs I try and write as characters in films, a bit more cinematic. Like ‘Shadows In The City’ from the EP is really quite character-based. There’s a couple of songs on the album that are a little weird – saxons/ vikings coming to destroy a village or someone escaping from a prison – obviously not stuff I have personal experience of! But some of the album songs are quite personal.
